We all had a great time on Sept 7th celebrating the birthday of the beloved deity Ganapathi Another year passed for Sangama and 2003 was respectfully renounced and 2004 joyously invited into our lives with a fun filled party and food and games on the New Years Eve. Sangama’s 19th year is just around the corner.
The community got together for a touching and soulful event when we paid tributes and sang glory to the lives of several eminent artists and writers who passed away in the last year. Shraddanjali was well attended and the speakers at the event did an excellent job of bringing home the essence of the lives of these eminent personalities. The event and its details got publicity through www.thatskannada.com
Preethi, Prema, Pranaya was an uncommon event in Sangama and thanks to all of the community, we had an astounding day and lots of fun. The next movie Nanna Hendthi Chennagiddale has already received a roaring welcome. We look forward to seeing you there! Please NOTE that the screening will be at The Northwest Plaza Wehrenberg Theater instead of The Winifred Moore Auditorium announced earlier.
Ugadi is almost here. This time it is the ‘Tarana’ Samvatsara that shall rejuvenate our lives. Sangama will celebrate this joyous event on April 17th at the Crestview Middle School (Driving Directions),. The New Year shall ring in with cultural events and another mouth-watering dinner and welcome new faces to lead Sangama to its 20th year. Happy Ugadi to all!
2004 also marks the Centenary celebrations of Kuvempu - one of the great literary geniuses of Kannada. Winner of the first ever Jnanapith award for Kannada literature, Kuvempu was born on December 29, 1904, in Shimoga district and propounded the concept of Vishwa Manava-the world citizen, before he passed away in 1994.

What is Ugadi?
Ugadi is derived from Yuga Aadi (Yuga + Aadi means beginning of New age). It is believed that the creator of the Hindu pantheon Lord Brahma started creation on this day - Chaithra Shuddha Prathipade or the Ugadi day.
According to Hindu myths, Lord Brahma created the earth and set days, nights, dates, weeks, fortnights, months, seasons, and years to count the time. During Ramayana period, the New Year was being celebrated on the first day of Uttharayana. So, Chaitra was the 12th month. Varahamihira, a saint who lived in sixth century, started a new method of celebrating New Year on Chaitra Shuddha Prathipade. His calculation was based on the onset of spring.
Ugadi is widely celebrated in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala,
People consume Bevu (neem) and Bella (jaggery). The inner significance of this is that life is a mixture of good and bad, joy and sorrow, success and losses, and all of them have to be treated alike. All experiences have to be treated with equanimity.
