Kuvempu
Kuvempu – the Pen Name of Kuppalli Venkatappa Puttappa is one of the most popular literary genius of Kannada literature .He has the honour of winning the first ever Jnanapeeta Award, the highest award bestowed for Literature by the Government of India.He enunciated and spread the concept of “Vishva Manava” - the philosophy of Universal Manhood. We salute him on his centenary year of birth.
Kuvempu was born on December 29, 1904 in Hirekodige and brought up in Kuppali Village in Shimoga district. Later on he moved to Mysore and completed his education in Mysore. He completed his M.A degree in Kannada in 1929. After completing his education he joined Maharaja’s College as a Kannada lecturer. In the year 1946 he became the Professor and Head of Department of Kannada . He went on to become the Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University from 1956 to 1960. After his retirement, he continued to reside at his residence 'Udayaravi' in Vontikoppal, Mysore. In the year 1968, he was honoured with the highest literary award, the Jnanapeeta award for his magnum opus "Ramayana Darshanam".
Kuvempu produced over 30 major collections of poems in a period spanning 5 decades. Kuvempu was not only known as a poet, he was a Scholar, Novelist, Biographer, Translator, Critic and Play writer. He was also an author of several books for Kids.
"Kaanuru Subbamma Heggadathi" , "Malegalalli Madumagalu" are his famous novels and has penned innumerable poems , many of which are popular songs known as Bhavageethe .
Kuvempu passed away in the year 1994. He has left behind a wealth of literature that shall remain forever green in the Kannada literary world.
